The Rolex Datejust: A Symbol of Prestige and Innovation
Few watches have achieved the legendary status of the Rolex Datejust. Launched in 1945, it was the first wristwatch to feature an
automatically changing date window—a groundbreaking innovation that cemented Rolex’s reputation for precision and craftsmanship. With its signature fluted bezel, Cyclops date lens, and versatile styling, the Datejust seamlessly blends heritage with modern elegance.

DATEJUST HISTORY TIMELINE

1945
BIRTH OF the datejust
Rolex introduced the Datejust in 1945 as the world’s first self-winding wristwatch with an automatically changing date. Debuting as Ref. 4467 in yellow gold, it featured the new Jubilee bracelet and the classic 36mm Oyster case. Nicknamed the “Ovettone” for its rounded caseback, the Datejust set the standard for modern wristwatches by blending function with refined design.

1950's
The Cyclops Lens & Wider Appeal
In 1954, Rolex added the Cyclops lens, magnifying the date and becoming a signature design element. The Datejust expanded into stainless steel and two-tone versions, appealing to a broader market while maintaining its status as a professional’s go-to dress watch.

1960's
Elegant Refinement
The 1960s brought references like the 1601, which introduced the fluted white gold bezel and a variety of dial styles, from pie-pan to linen. With more movement improvements and dial options, the Datejust evolved into a reliable yet elegant everyday watch for rising professionals.

1970's
Quickset & Quartz Options
The introduction of the Caliber 3035 in 1977 added a quickset date feature for easier use. During the Quartz Crisis, Rolex launched the Oysterquartz Datejust (Ref. 17000), combining the classic design with an angular case and in-house quartz movement, while automatics remained the fan favorite.

1980's
The Modern Classic Emerges
With the Ref. 16200 series and Caliber 3135, the Datejust gained a sapphire crystal, better accuracy, and improved water resistance. It became a true icon of quiet luxury — durable, elegant, and a symbol of professional success.

1990's–2000's
New Materials & Bold Proportions
Rolex continued expanding dial and bezel options and refined bracelet design. In 2009, the Datejust II launched with a 41mm case, aiming to match modern sizing trends. While some found it slightly bulky, it introduced the Datejust to a new generation of larger-watch fans.

2016
The Datejust 41
Rolex replaced the Datejust II with the Datejust 41, featuring sleeker lugs, a thinner bezel, and the Caliber 3235 — boasting a 70-hour power reserve and Chronergy escapement. It struck the perfect balance between modern size and classic proportions.

2020's
Contemporary Variety, Classic Roots
Today’s Datejust collection spans 28mm to 41mm, with countless combinations of metals, bezels, dials, and bracelets. Creative dial designs like fluted motifs, palm patterns, and the Wimbledon dial keep it fresh, while the core DNA — elegance, precision, and everyday versatility — remains unchanged.
