The Epitome of Luxury and Sophistication

The Rolex Day-Date: A Symbol of Excellence & STATUS

The Rolex Day-Date, often referred to as the “Presidents’ Watch,” is more than just a timepiece; it’s a symbol of prestige and achievement. Since its introduction in 1956, the Day-Date has been the choice of leaders, visionaries, and those who appreciate the finer things in life.

1956

The Birth of the Day-Date

The Rolex Day-Date debuted in 1956 as the first wristwatch to display both the date and the day of the week spelled out in full — a world first. It was an immediate technical and stylistic milestone. Introduced as Ref. 6511, it featured an automatic movement, waterproof Oyster case, and was only available in 18k gold or platinum — never in stainless steel.

This watch wasn’t just innovative — it was exclusively luxurious from the start.

1957

The President Bracelet is Born

A year later, Rolex refined the model into Ref. 6611, with a new chronometer-rated movement and updated design. It also introduced the now-famous three-link "President" bracelet, created specifically for the Day-Date. While Rolex never officially called the watch the “President,” the name stuck — especially after it appeared on the wrists of global leaders and U.S. presidents.

1960s–1970s

Presidential Popularity

Throughout the '60s and '70s, the Day-Date became the de facto “power watch.” It was worn by U.S. Presidents (like Lyndon B. Johnson), world leaders, CEOs, and cultural icons. The watch evolved with updated references like the 1803, known for its pie-pan dial and fluted bezel. Rolex also expanded language options for the day display — now available in over 25 languages.

1980'S

Refinement & Caliber 3055

Rolex introduced the Ref. 18038 in 1977, marking a transition to quickset date functionality thanks to the Caliber 3055. The design also featured a sapphire crystal, replacing acrylic. In the 1980s, the Day-Date became more than a status symbol — it was a symbol of achievement, often gifted for major milestones.

1990'S

Double Quickset & Caliber 3155

With the Ref. 18238, Rolex introduced the double quickset function via the Caliber 3155, making both the day and date easy to adjust. This model is often associated with the classic yellow gold “President” style — fluted bezel, champagne dial, and all-gold bracelet — and remains an icon of '80s and '90s luxury.

2000's

New Sizes & Precious Materials

Rolex expanded the Day-Date lineup with new materials (like Everose gold) and dial variations, as well as smaller offerings like the Day-Date 36mm and larger ones like the Day-Date II (41mm) in 2008. The Day-Date II had a bolder presence but divided purists due to its bulkier proportions.

2015

The Day-Date 40 & Caliber 3255

Rolex unveiled the Day-Date 40 in 2015, replacing the Day-Date II with more refined proportions and introducing the high-performance Caliber 3255, boasting a 70-hour power reserve and improved accuracy. It was a perfect balance between tradition and modernity, keeping the President at the top of Rolex’s lineup.

2020'S

Creative Dials & Continued Prestige

Today, the Day-Date is available in platinum, yellow gold, white gold, and Everose, with a wide array of dials — from meteorite to lacquer, and even emoji-themed and “inspirational word” day wheels in special editions. It remains the ultimate statement watch, worn by heads of state, hip-hop royalty, and connoisseurs alike.
